BC Day: The 5 Iconic Food in BC you NEED to Know!

British Columbia (BC) Day is celebrated on the first Monday of August every year, and is meant to recognize the contributions of such people in shaping the social, cultural, and political landscape of the region. What better way to celebrate the occasion by indulging in tasty food that’s home to BC? Here are a list of delicacies that’s iconic to BC and where to find them:

1. BC Roll




Yes, there’s actually a sushi roll named after the province! The BC roll consists of barbecued salmon skin coated in a sweet sauce with rice on the outside & cucumber. It’s a staple BC dish that was invented by Japanese-Canadian chef Hidekazu Tojo back in 1974! You can try this roll at numerous Japanese restaurants in BC, from Sen Zushi in Victoria, Roll & Chicken in Nanaimo, Momo Sushi in Kelowna, Hatsuki Sushi in Kamloops, and also Wasabi Sushi & Grill in Maple Ridge.

2. Butter Chicken Pizza




Did you know that BC has the highest population of Indo-Canadians by percentage? This explains why they experimented with different cuisines and fused 2 delicious dishes from different parts of the world together: pizza AND butter chicken! You can find butter chicken pizza at mom and pop shops throughout BC, such as Pizzalicious in Squamish and Hellcrust Pizza in Maple Ridge. 3. Dungeness Crab




The Dungeness crab is one of the most commonly caught crabs in BC. The meat is sweet and has a delicate texture, which is why it tastes amazing on its own and as an ingredient for many dishes! Victoria is known for its abundance of fresh seafood in BC, so if you’re ever in town, try the fresh Dungeness crab at Nautical Nellies. You can also try the Dungeness crab cakes or Dungeness Benny from Heron Rock Bistro if you don’t feel like breaking crab shells. 4. Wild Pacific Salmon




Wild BC salmon dwells in BC’s pure, natural environment and is formed by nature’s goodness. Born in the cold coastal and interior waters of BC, wild salmon swim to the open Pacific Ocean to mature and return to their native waters to spawn. 5. Nanaimo Bars




The Nanaimo bar is a guilty pleasure confection with a soft layer of yellow custard sandwiched between rich chocolate ganache and a coconut-graham crust. It’s interesting to hear different answers when you ask people in Nanaimo about the history of the Nanaimo bar, which goes back to as early as the 1950s!
